Pharmaceutical Sciences

The discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers systematic education on procurement, synthesis and formulation, standardization and marketing of Medicines. With invention & discoveries of new drug molecules the repertoire of medicine have grown enormously and the subject has developed into a multidisciplinary science. The syllabus of Pharmacy borrows heavily from both basic and applied sciences. The subjects can be broadly classified as:

  • Pharmacognosy & Phytochemistry- The isolation and evaluation of medicinal substances from natural sources.
  • Analytical Sciences- Hi tech instrumentation used in pharmaceutical industry for quality control procedure and research.
  • Pharmacology- The therapeutic action of drug on body.
  • Pharmaceutical engineering and technology- The technological aspect of manufacturing and formulation.
  • Hospital and Clinical pharmacy- Optimum uses of drug in specific patient conditions.
  • Medicinal Chemistry - Designing & synthesis of molecules of medicinal importance.

The Department

The Department came into existence in 1994 and now the admissions in B. Pharmacy will be open for the 17th batch. The discipline of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers systematic study of synthesis, analysis, formulation, standardizations, marketing and dispensing of Medicines. The syllabus of B. Pharm. borrows equally from both basic and applied sciences. The subjects can be broadly classified as: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, dealing with synthetic drugs; pharmaceutical analysis, involving modern analytical methods and sophisticated instruments for quality control of basic drug and formulation; Chemistry of natural products, explaining methods of isolation, purification, characterization and biological evaluation of phytopharmaceuticals; Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical technology dealing with preparation of tablets, capsules, injections, syrups etc; Pharmacology and Toxicology dealing with study of action of drugs on living organism and their adverse effect and Pharmacognosy, a science dealing with drug of natural (plants) sources.

Faculty Base

The department has well qualified and experienced faculty members specialized in various fields of Pharmaceutical Science. Several faculty members are doctorate. The faculty is actively engaged in Research with few of them pursuing their PhD's. They are continuously enriching themselves by attending workshops, symposium refresher courses and conferences at National and International levels. Faculty members & students have won the Young scientist awards at Uttarakhand Science Congress, and other conferences.
